Creative Writing Inspired by Japanese Literature
Students read and discussed the novella Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto and then responded creatively through writing. The assignment was very open-ended: create a short work of poetry or prose based on a thematic element in the novella, and include a symbol in your creative work.
Students loved this novella, as they readily connected with the protagonist, Mikage. Her journey of dealing with the death of her last remaining family member, her grandmother, engages students in a poetic and honest exploration of identity, purpose, and the healing power of friendship and love.
